Free dynamic QR code that never expires
You want a QR code you can print today, change later, and never worry about. Here is how the two kinds of QR code work, why "free" dynamic codes often break, and how to pick the right one.
Static vs dynamic, in one minute
- Static QR code: the final URL is written into the black-and-white pattern. It works with no account and no server, so it cannot expire. The catch: you can never change where it points. If the page moves, the printed code is dead.
- Dynamic QR code: the pattern holds a short link (on KeepQR,
https://qr.tneemo.com/r/…) that redirects to your URL. You can change the destination after printing and see how many people scanned it. The catch: the short link belongs to whoever runs the redirect.
Why free dynamic codes stop working
With a dynamic code, the provider decides whether the redirect keeps running. Several of the best-known generators publicly document that dynamic codes stop redirecting when a free trial ends or when a paid subscription is not renewed. Scanners then land on a service page instead of your menu, flyer or business card link. We collected what each one says, with links to their own help pages, in KeepQR vs alternatives.
What KeepQR does differently
- Free means free. 3 dynamic codes, no trial clock, no credit card.
- Cancel and they still work. When a Pro plan ends, every code keeps redirecting to its last destination. You only lose editing and analytics until you subscribe again.
- Monthly or yearly. Pro is $6/month or $60/year, cancel anytime from your account.
- Private analytics. Daily scans by country. No IP addresses stored.
The one exception, written into our Terms: codes used for phishing, malware, fraud or other abuse can be disabled.
Which one should you use?
- The link will never change and you don't need scan counts → a static code is the most durable choice, from any generator.
- The link might change (menus, events, promotions, a page you may move) or you want scan counts → a dynamic code, from a provider that promises not to switch it off.
FAQ
Is there a free dynamic QR code that never expires?
Yes. On KeepQR the free plan includes 3 dynamic codes, and they are not switched off after a trial. You can edit their destination and see 30 days of scan analytics.
What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?
A static QR code stores the final URL inside the pattern, so it works without any service but can never be changed. A dynamic QR code stores a short link that redirects to your URL, so you can change the destination after printing and count scans.
Why do some free dynamic QR codes stop working?
Because the short link belongs to the provider. Several popular generators document that dynamic codes created during a free trial, or kept after a subscription ends, stop redirecting. See our comparison page for sources.
What happens to my KeepQR codes if I cancel Pro?
They keep redirecting to their last destination. Editing and analytics pause until you subscribe again, and scans are still counted in the meantime.
Is there any case where a KeepQR code is disabled?
Only for abuse: codes used for phishing, malware, fraud, illegal content or spam can be disabled, as described in our Terms.
What does "never expires" not cover?
A dynamic code depends on its redirect service being online, and on the destination page still existing. If you never need to change the link, a static QR code is the most durable option.
